Bound or bonded?
Resin Bound vs Resin Bonded Driveways
Resin driveways are quickly challenging block paving as the preferred choice for a brand-new driveway, especially as developments in resin manufacturing have continued to improve its performance over earlier versions. The choice of colours is large, but it is essential to know that the term “resin driveway” covers two different versions, with quite different properties.
What we recommend
Resin Bound
As the name suggests, the coloured stone and rock particles are combined with the resin right the way through the mixture, so every stone is coated before the mix is laid and spread out. That makes it a single, complete product, and a much more robust and longer-lasting choice.
As well as being far sturdier, it still lets water drain all the way through the hardened mixture, and it gives a smoother top layer which is UV resistant.
Cheaper, less durable
Resin Bonded
Here the resin is applied just to the top of the existing or newly created base layer, and the stone and rock particles are then scattered over it. Once hardened, the resin forms a single, strong, non-porous sheet that the aggregate sticks to.
Because each stone sits on the resin rather than being surrounded by it, the particles are held far less firmly than in a resin bound surface. The result is a much rougher finish, with more of the aggregate coming loose over time.
Always be certain of what you have been quoted for: a resin bonded driveway will be cheaper, and inferior to a resin bound one.
Choose your colour
Resin Bound Driveways Rotherham
If you are looking to install a resin bound driveway in Rotherham, look no further than our team. Resin drives give a high-quality finish with very little maintenance, and with a large selection of colours you are sure to find a shade of grey, green, blue, brown, buff, white or black you can agree on.
Your resin driveway will continue to look good for many years thanks to its good resistance to cracking and chipping, and it is easy to keep clean. That makes resin bound one of the best driveway options there is.
Already have a drive?
Resin Over an Existing Driveway
Sometimes resin can be applied over an existing driveway, but it depends on what your driveway is, how well its base was installed and what the rainwater run-off is likely to be. Laying on top of an existing porous surface may be possible, which could save you some money.
But unless we can get a clear picture of the quality of the base, it may affect our ability to guarantee our work, because we would be relying on someone else’s groundwork. We can talk through all the options with you and give you impartial advice on every driveway option.
Costs
Resin Driveway Cost
Guide price
£90–£130
per m², or around £4,500–£6,500 for a typical 50m² driveway, with every driveway priced on its own considerations
A resin bound driveway does come at a premium. The great thing about Driveways Rotherham is that we can price you for a couple of driveway options, so if your budget can’t stretch to your first choice, we can help you with alternatives that will still give you an excellent driveway.
The guide price is a starting point. Your quote will depend on:
- The size of the driveway
- The condition of the existing base
- Borders, edging and patterns
- Access to the driveway
Patios
Resin Patios Rotherham
There are plenty of choices to make when picking a patio, and resin patios are rapidly gaining in popularity. A great patio makes a big difference to how you use and enjoy your garden, especially for entertaining. So what makes people choose resin patios in Rotherham? Much the same reasons they choose resin for a driveway.
The finish looks excellent, it is pleasant to walk on in summer, and it doesn’t turn slippery when it gets a little wet, unlike some paving slabs. Quite often the deciding factor is the range of colours: a resin patio surrounded by blocks, or split with lines of blockwork, can look really good.
It is a low-maintenance patio option. Although a patio won’t see the heavy use a driveway does, if the budget allows, try not to be tempted by a resin bonded patio. Resin bound is always the best option, whether for a driveway or a patio.
Commercial
Resin Pathways & Commercial Surfacing Rotherham
More enquiries are coming in these days for pathways on, or leading to, commercial and public premises.
Safer walkways
For commercial and public sector settings such as company car parks, private roads and public or private walkways, a resin bound surface is ideal. With no drainage issues it is a much safer surface, reducing the risk of slips and falls, and its grip means that even in icy conditions it gives a better walking surface than most other parking and pathway surfaces.
Low maintenance, no trip hazards
As well as being low maintenance and good looking, it is a very practical surface for walking and for wheelchairs. A resin path won’t become slippery when wet, and there are no bits to “jut out”, which happens more often with slabs or blocks. No business wants to deal with a trip incident, which makes a resin path ideal.

Built to last
How Long Does a Resin Driveway Last?
If it is taken care of, a resin bound surface can last twenty years. Upkeep should simply mean brushing off debris such as leaves and an occasional jet wash, which keeps your resin driveway looking new throughout its life.
Designed for lighter vehicles
Resin bound driveways were originally developed for lighter vehicle traffic. If you intend to park heavy commercial lorries or use lifting equipment on the area, the risk of damage to the resin means it may not be the best option for you.
Our recommendation
Why We Recommend Resin Bound
Having explained the difference between resin bound and resin bonded, we concentrate on resin bound, because it is the choice that will give you an outstanding, long-lasting resin drive.
First, the look. With such a wide range of colours now available, you are almost certain to find at least one option that excites you. Resin bound driveways are also very strong and quite smooth, so moss and algae find it hard to take hold, which makes the surface easy to keep in tip-top condition, looking like new year after year.
Its porous nature lets rainfall seep straight through into the ground directly below, spreading the water evenly across the whole drive, so there is no need to install additional drains to give rainwater an escape route. And with modern coatings giving anti-slip and UV resistance to stop the colour fading, it really is made to last.
If budget does lead you towards resin bonded, it is better suited to a patio or path than a driveway, where it won’t take vehicle traffic.

FAQs
Resin Driveway, Patio & Pathway Questions
How long does a resin driveway last?
If it is taken care of, a resin bound surface can last twenty years. Brushing off leaves and debris and an occasional jet wash is all the upkeep it needs.
Can resin be laid over my existing driveway?
Sometimes. It depends on what your driveway is, how well its base was installed and what the rainwater run-off is likely to be. If we can’t get a clear picture of the base, we may not be able to guarantee the work, so we will inspect it and give you impartial advice.
Would you recommend a resin patio?
We try to steer away from recommending any one surface, as each may have particular merits for you. Budget is often one of the most important criteria, and sometimes you may have thought you wanted one type of driveway or patio, then realised it wouldn’t give you all the practical benefits you wanted.
We will get a good understanding of how you intend to use your driveway or patio and what you want to achieve, then give you balanced points to help you make the decision that is best for your circumstances and budget.
Are resin patios permeable?
A resin bound patio is one which allows water to “permeate” through it, soaking down rather than running across the surface.
From an environmental and practical point of view, most councils don’t want large amounts of water running down roads towards drains, which can clog and cause localised flooding, so councils favour resin bound surfaces. With tarmac and with both standard and patterned concrete, the need to install drains or soakaways to stop water reaching public areas can add to your installation costs.
Are resin patios low maintenance?
Yes, as long as you’ve chosen a resin bound patio. Patios face less harsh conditions than a drive, surface dirt can be swept up easily, and moss and algae struggle to find anywhere to take hold.
Can a resin pathway be re-laid on an existing base?
It depends on the state and quality of your base and how the existing slabs were fixed to it. Removing an existing patio generally takes some of the sub-base with it. We will inspect the sub-base, and more often than not, topping it up and re-setting it will let the new surface be laid, which saves you money.
If we find during removal that a poor sub-base, or none at all, was laid, we take the same approach as for a brand-new patio: the ground is dug to the required level and a proper base installed before your new surface is laid.
What are the main differences between a resin pathway and block paving?
A resin bound path is a very low-maintenance option, as weeds and algae find it difficult to take hold, whereas block paving needs more regular cleaning, with weed killer applied to stop weeds and moss forming between the blocks. That isn’t a big task if it’s done regularly, taking the approach of prevention rather than cure.
Block paving can be laid exactly as you want, so you can create a unique design and mix blocks of different colours, and if damage occurs, replacing a few blocks is much simpler than patch-repairing a resin path.
